(WIS) It’s the NCAA Final four. The No. 1 seed Wildcats were ousted by the No. 13 seed Tigers, taking third place in the Midwest Regional.
The Wildcats had too much trouble with the Tigers all weekend. It started with their opening match, which the Wildcats were leading, 6-2, in the third set, when Nacional Rojas hit a monster forehand winner, which allowed the Tigers to tie the set at 7-7. The Tigers took the set, 15-10.
Another wild win for the Tigers in their opening match was the result of another Rojas forehand winner that was answered by the Wildcats. It was 12-11 in favor of the Tigers in the second set.
The Wildcats had to break back, winning the set 14-12 in the third and final set.
“We were extremely happy with that win,” Rojas said. “In the first round, we had to fight to win. We had a lot of one-point deficits against two-time national champion, Guadalajara.”
In the third and final set, though, the Tigers had a lot to overcome. They trailed 7-0 in the first game. It was 9-7 in favor of the Wildcats before Rojas answered with another forehand winner. The Tigers then broke the back, winning 14-9 to get to the quarterfinals.
Against the Tigers, the Wildcats had trouble with the upper-hand shots and deep balls.
“We just weren’t hitting,” said Wildcat senior Emily Barr, who went 4-0. “We just weren’t hitting the ball in the court, and I think that we just had bad mistakes. That’s something that we have to work on because, if we can fix our mistakes and be more consistent, we can be much better.”
The Wildcats face No. 8 seed Wichita State in the semifinals. The Shockers won the Midwest Regional, defeating No. 9 seed Loyola-Chicago, 4-1, in the final. The Shockers have won the tournament for the last four years. ac619d1d87
